From where he hid in his safe room, the watcher regarded the cowled woman kneeling, her head bowed, in her circle. She raised her head, then rose from her knees slowly, making sure to remain within the circle she’d drawn. From the portal before her, shifting colors illuminated her naked body with a purple sheen.
The watcher turned his attention to his computer and looked at the figures. The pulsating mass not only appeared bigger, but the results also demonstrated it had indeed grown larger. This was an unexpected outcome and meant it was no longer safe, even for the woman, to leave the circle—or for anyone else to enter the room.
Although there was a deep temptation to be in the room, since even the priestess herself could take no chances, watching from the other side of a two-way mirror within his own circle would suffice.
For now.
The portal slowly shrank to leave a smaller aperture of purple light. However, the woman didn’t leave her circle immediately, as if untrusting it was safe. Then, she slowly dismissed her circle and walked rapidly from the room without looking back.
A moment later there was a tap on the door of the room where the watcher silently waited. Flicking a switch, the door slid open, but the priestess didn’t enter. Instead, she remained in the doorway.
“The Master has spoken. We have the name of the sacrifice, and there are no more than a few weeks in which to have him here when all will align.”
“You were more afraid of him than usual.” The watcher waved at the screen from where they’d safely observed the proceedings.
The woman shrugged a single shoulder. “You won’t even remain in the same room as him. He was petulant today, eager to be free and liable to lash out. There was no point in taking an unnecessary risk.”
“Very good. Then I’ll locate our sacrifice and make all the arrangements. We will still need the blood of the other, I take it?”
“Yes, we will.” The woman nodded. “Today, I felt he was hiding something, but it’s impossible to know. Despite supplying the timing and telling me what is necessary for the ritual, I was certain that if he could have broken through then and there, he would have.”
“Because he wishes to unleash chaos. When we have him in our world, that won’t be a problem. He’ll serve us and give us the power to rule. The world will be in the palm of our hands. Nothing and no one will stand in our way.”
“As we will, so mote it be,” the woman intoned softly.
“So mote it be.”
