“Holy shit, Jake. What is that?”
Jake followed the other taillights through the pitch-black forest and turned their car around a bend of the road into a massive dirt parking lot. There had been nothing but eerie frozen darkness around them until then. The snowbanks on the side of the road were smaller now from the past few warm days, but all day long, gray clouds had threatened another squall of snow overnight. A white Christmas would be nice, but the upcoming snow was the last thing on Kit’s mind as Jake swung into a spot and put the sleek silver Volvo in park.
“It’s the hottest nightclub around,” Jake said. “Or should I say the coolest?”
Kit couldn’t stop staring out of the window at the massive building in front of them. It was a stunning replica of a fairytale castle, like a smaller version of the one at Disney World, but this one was constructed of what appeared to be nothing but massive frosty blocks of ice that were lit with radiant spotlights of turquoise, emerald and magenta. The rainbow lighting made the whole building look like the aurora borealis had been trapped in the frozen blocks, and the castle shifted with enchanted fairy light.
“This is my surprise?” Kit asked, turning back to Jake. That familiar photo-perfect grin of his spread across Jake’s face and it made Kit’s stomach do a flip, like it always did.
“Just the first one of the night.”
Kit gulped and was hyper-aware of the warmth in his cheeks, although he hoped he could blame it on the heat blasting out of the vents.
“It looks beautiful.”
“Just wait until we get inside.” Jake turned the engine off and opened his door to hop out. Butterflies squirmed inside Kit’s stomach, but he took a deep breath and gathered as much confidence as he could muster before opening his door to follow.
I’ve got this. Nothing to it.
The parking lot was bustling, and cars were still filing in from the gravel road through the forest. People were spilling out of their warm cars and ghostly clouds of breath plumed upward in the nippy air as they laughed and called out to each other, wishing one another “Merry Christmas Eve” and joking about the freezing cold. The men were dressed in stylish pea coats and most of the women were wearing shockingly short cocktail dresses under their winter jackets. Even with their hosiery and knee-high boots, they must have been freezing out here, but comfort apparently took a back seat to looking glamorous.
A wave of self-consciousness crashed over Kit for the umpteenth time tonight. Sure, his straight-cut dark-wash jeans were the nicest pair he owned and his gray winter coat was only a year old, but the velvet choker necklace he wore peeked just above the collar and the golden jingle bell in the center tinkled with every step he took, rattling his nerves. He couldn’t believe Jake had managed to get him to agree to this whole crazy night.
The choker was daring, but at least no one else but Jake knew what was underneath the rest of his clothes.
A considerably sized man who was built like a mountain stood as the bouncer at the entrance. A short line of women stood in front of him as he checked their IDs. Kit dug his own out of the back pocket of his jeans and got it ready. When they got to the front of the line, Jake handed his to the guy. He gave it an obligatory glance but passed it right back. Kit’s, however, he dissected with intense scrutiny, but after a few glances back and forth between Kit and his photo, he gave it back with a subtle look of reluctance on his face. Kit couldn’t help it if, even though he was twenty-three, people still mistook him for a high schooler. He was five-foot-seven, but he looked even smaller compared to Jake’s impressive six feet and two inches next to him.
Jake had joked on their first date a month ago that he would have pegged Kit at no older than nineteen if it hadn’t been for the way he could put the shots back and how he swore like a sailor. Kit had argued that perhaps those reasons only reinforced the idea, but Jake had laughed and said he liked him still regardless.
Slowly falling head over heels for Jake had been too easy, but these past ten days? Well, they had certainly put Kit’s courage to the test.
The bouncer stepped aside to let them pass, and Jake led them inside. Kit tried his best to smother his nervousness, but it was impossible to forget that the night was only just beginning and he had no clue what Jake had in store for him.
