Peter never ceases to amaze me with his enthralling stories of adventure and suspense, and we’re just getting started with the series!

I had to stay up late last night to finish Mann Hunt by Peter E. Fenton, which I rarely do since I typically read at least two books at once and so can stop reading easily without losing the plot line. One of the reasons I could not put it down was the mystery itself, which I did not figure out before the end, and the other was the main character, Declan Hunt. Declan tries to be a hard-boiled detective, a la Sam Spade, even to keeping a bottle of booze in his desk, but his exterior hides a soft heart inside. He mostly focuses on LGBTQ+ cases and has an older woman as his office assignment. When she is on vacation, Declan hires Charlie in her place. It turns out Charlie is a great fit for a P.I.’s office. The mystery is complicated but the author throws out little clues that make the denouement believable and not a deus ex machina. In short, I loved it! My only complaint is that I have to wait until 2024 for the next in the series.

If the next two of the promised three books in this series are as good as this, I’ll be getting them as soon as they’re released.
Peter Fenton does a great job with this classic “noir” detective story, set in modern-day Calgary, Alberta.

So, lest you miss my position – ‘Mann Hunt’ is quite wonderful. The characters are fully developed for your interest or distaste. There is sufficient sex, but not so much as to exhaust the reader or the main characters – it ain’t quite that kind of book. The plot’s tension is constructed to keep us turning the pages, as it gyres tightly to its conclusion. As a plus, clearly more adventures will be at hand (or some more endearing body parts?) in subsequent books in this series. The author has facile use of language, which is akin to a well-seasoned meal. Example: “The cleaning kid at the gay bar shouted an announcement, “Toilets are being washed in a minute. Use ‘em now or forever hold your pees.” Go! Enjoy, until you do!

New author to me, and I really, really enjoyed it. It’s a full-on PI thriller, and the characters are fun, engaging, and really made me care about them. I really got hooked on what was happening plot-wise, too.

Declan is gruff but caring. Charlie is nerdy but not afraid to have a go and show his initiative. Charlie comes as a temp to work for Declan but fits straight away. It gives him an escape from his smothering parents too and gives Declan someone to actually work with. In terms of romance, it’s a slow burn and a possibility for now (Declan even has a lover early on). Don’t let this put you off, though, because the way their relationship develops feels natural; there is a connection there, and they just need to work their way to it. Their banter and interactions are absorbing and I loved both characters.

It’s definitely going to be a series that keeps you wanting to come back more. This is a definite recommendation from me; I can’t wait for more stories from this great pairing.

Mann Hunt is the first story I’ve read by Peter E. Fenton and I really enjoyed it – it’s well written, easy to follow and flows well. It’s also suspenseful and dangerous, with fast-paced action, snarky humor, a ton of emotions, a bit of steam and a bit in the romance department too. Along with a surprise twist there’s danger, greed, corruption, deceit, secrets and homophobia.

Mann Hunt is a fast-paced whodunit with solid writing and enough intrigue that although I figured out who the baddie is earlier than I would have liked, the wrap-up was still satisfying.
